Transforming Unfinished Furniture with Minwax

Unfinished pieces like magazine stands, footstools, picture frames and bookshelves are ideal for the novice woodworker. They let you experiment with different stains and finishes while you grow comfortable and confident with your own abilities. Choose a simple piece for your first project. Use a stain and protective finish in one product like Minwax PolyShades.

Step One:  Sand to prepare the wood surface for staining.

Step Two:  Rub surface with a tack rag to remove grit.

Step Three:  If you are uncertain as to what type of wood you are working with, conduct the "fingernail" test to determine if you have a softwood or a hard wood. If your fingernail dents the surface, you have a soft wood, like pine. Since softwoods tend to absorb stain unevenly, pre-treat the wood with Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner before staining. This extra step will help you control color penetration.

Step Four:  Apply the stain in a thin, even coat, working in small areas. Go back and gently stroke and finish to level any air bubbles. Let dry 6 to 8 hours or overnight. To add a custom look, use antique brass and porcelain drawer pulls and knobs.

If you have product left over, wipe the can rim so that product in the rim doesn't dry out and cause lid not to form a tight seal. After sealing, store cans away from heat. Clean brushes used for oil-based finishes with mineral spirits; soap and water is all that is needed for brushes used for water cleanup products. Please be mindful of the safe way to dispose of used rags and other waste. Rags, steel wool and other waste soaked with oil finishes may spontaneously catch fire if improperly discarded. Place rags, steel wool and waste immediately after use in a water-filled, metal container. Tightly seal and then dispose of in accordance with local regulations. Be sure to keep the container out of reach of children.
